Brookside star turns talent spotter at Knowsley school
Former Brookside actor Dean Sullivan joined the pupils of Knowsley Hey Arts College for a showcase of music, drama, media and expressive arts.
The actor hosted a finale performance that brought to a close a two day event showcasing the variety of work the college has been involved in.
Knowsley Hey in Huyton was given specialist arts college status last September and the pupils have been introduced to first rate art work from across the world.
The two day exhibition pulled in lots of parents, grandparents, friends, but also local residents who were interested to see what work the college has been involved in. There was a full house for the finale performance and Dean Sullivan was clearly impressed by the standard of talent on display.
Director of Arts at the school, Paul Mellor said, “Dean stayed way beyond what had been planned and really enjoyed himself.
“This event showed how far we have come since we got our specialist status and the wealth of talent at the school.
“The pupils have experienced some of the best art work available – we recently organised an exhibition of etchings by the Spanish artist Goya.
“This event did wonders for their self esteem. We saw some of the pupils really coming into their own.”
Paul Mellor has worked in the commercial art world as well as academia and uses his experience to bridge the gap between teaching arts and commercial performance.
Executive director of Children's Services in Knowsley, Damian Allen, said: “Everyone at Knowsley Hey School worked hard to achieve specialist arts college status and that work has paid off.
“The pupils have displayed an incredible degree of talent in all sorts of areas and staff are working to spread that creativity to other subjects.
“This event displayed some really exciting work.”

Thank you for visiting our Website.
Knowsley Hey Arts College is a popular school with over 1000 students. We cater for students of all ability between the ages of 11 and 16. The school has strong partnerships with students, parents, teachers, governors and the community. We believe that we need to work together to make sure that every student maintains high standards and achieves success. We aim to provide every means of guidance for students to achieve their best external examinations results possible.
Here at Knowsley Hey Arts College we want every student to achieve his or her full potential. We offer a range of courses to match the talent and ability of all. We are also proud of our extra curricular activities.
When students come to us we want them to feel happy and secure: only then can they do their best. We aim to provide a friendly and supportive atmosphere for everyone which also demands self discipline, tolerance and understanding of others.
We provide a curriculum that is broad, balanced and challenging – preparing students for the complexities of living in an increasingly technological age.
We gained Arts College Status in September 2006. This is based on our performance in Art and also Drama and Media.
Our pupils are creative and we hope to enrich our whole curriculum through creativity. In our GCSE summer examinations Art, Drama and Media performed well, as did many other subject areas.
However we need also to raise achievement across the school and some of our specialist school targets are to ensure all curriculum areas are involved in this.
We aim also to enhance teaching and learning through ICT across the curriculum.
This year we are planning many activities connected to the arts, including our first Arts Festival which will involve our community, business partners, all areas of the curriculum and various visual artists, musicians, theatre groups etc.
This website tells you more about our school. If we have left anything out or if there are any issues you wish to discuss or if you have any ideas about what we can include, please do contact us.
We will update any relevant information. If you wish to find out about partnership, sponsorship, collaboration etc, please contact Paul Mellor at school. If you have anything you would like to add or ask, please do so via this website enquiries form.
